The goal was to create a warmer, discovery-driven environment that increases dwell time while supporting an efficient rollout across hundreds of locations nationwide. The Challenge Barnes & Noble sought to move away from traditional, library-style layouts and introduce a more engaging, boutique-inspired store experience. The new store fixture program needed to: Increase product visibility with face-out book displays Support cross-merchandising of books, gifts, and games Allow localized customization Remain cost-efficient and scalable Balancing design innovation with a repeatable, national retail fixture system was critical to long-term success. The Solution VCI/Rose developed a flexible, scalable retail fixture system designed to support storytelling, merchandising versatility, and operational efficiency. Prominent merchandising tables highlight new releases and curated assortments, while integrated displays encourage cross-category shopping. The custom retail fixture program was engineered to support books, toys, journals, and seasonal items using adaptable core components. This approach allows stores to refresh layouts without replacing hardware, extending the lifecycle of the fixture investment. Long aisles were replaced with themed nooks and intuitive adjacencies, creating a more immersive shopping experience. Updated finishes, clean lines, and a modernized cash wrap complete the refreshed environment, reinforcing Barnes & Noble’s evolution while maintaining brand heritage. Execution Through strategic value engineering and standardized components, VCI/Rose ensured the retail fixture program could scale efficiently. Fixtures were engineered for repeatable manufacturing, simplified installation, and consistent quality across locations. VCI/Rose managed manufacturing, warehousing, and the coordinated nationwide rollout of the fixture program, delivering thousands of fixtures across new and remodeled stores. The Result The new Barnes & Noble store concept demonstrates how a thoughtfully designed retail fixture program can transform the in-store experience.
